One of the better known towns of Uttarakhand, Roorkee is centre of some great educational institutions. The biggest attraction of Roorkee however, remains the world class IIT. The town is also famous for Ganga Canal which divides it into civilian and military area. The spirit of Roorkee is well depicted by two lions. This ‘emblem’ of the town’s ‘spirit’ can be seen at various important destinations of the town.

IIT: The famed IIT (Indian Institute of Technology) has its genesis in Roorkee College. Constituted in 1847, its purpose was to train the manpower for the construction of Ganga Canal. Today it educates hundreds of students and prepares them for global challenges. |

IIT Roorkee’s Central Library: Established in 1848,it finds a special place in higher education libraries. Started with a couple of hundred books, today it has a collection of more than 3,00,000 books and is subscribed by more than 800 print and 8,000 online journals. |

Crystal World: The Largest amusement park close to Roorkee, it offers a variety of entertainment. Some of its offerings, like water sport, are immensely popular amongst children and grown-ups alike. A must visit and a popular destination for families. |

The War Memorial: Replica of Mahmood’s tower, it is one of the attractions of Roorkee and was built to commemorate the bravery of Subedar Devi Singh and his men who stormed the Ghazni fort in Afghanistan. |

Piran Kaliyar Sharif: ‘Mazaar’ of Hazrat Aliuddin Ali Ahmed ‘Sabir’, a sufi saint, it is frequented by people of all faiths. The place is popular amongst devotees as it is believed that neither a visit to Ajmer Sharif, nor ‘Haj’ is complete without a visit to this place. |

Patanjali Yogpeeth: Roorkee also is the proud “owner” of Patanjali Yogpeeth. A famous trust founded by the revered Swami Ramdev. Established to spread the awareness amongst the masses about the remedial powers of yoga and ayurveda, it draws thousands of devotees every year. One of the major aims of this trust is to develop India into a healthy country, free of diseases.
